In October 2017 Maarten van Aken was an artist in residence in Dalian, China. The languare barrier enforced to be silent, to listen, to observe. This resulted in a mindset of ‘living in the moment’.
The focus shifted towards the light on unconventional combinations in local architecture. The works created there are an attempt at capturing these moments and to build a bridge between inside and outside; China and the Netherlands; the physical and imaginary space.
In recent works he is interested in exploring reflections, which can be defined as another imaginary space. It becomes another way of playing with perception.
